How I Became a Bird Lover.

I have always loved birds, but never thought to use them as the main subject of my art. I always find it so joyful to sit in my backyard with a  cup of coffee in the morning or a book in my afternoons and listen to the birds’ conversations, observe busy mothers with their babies, guys fighting, amorous courtship and that noisy bird life.

Last spring I found 8 nests in my yard and I believe there were more hiding somewhere in thickets of trees. I missed when three baby birds flew away from their nest near my front door, but I didn’t miss when their mom built it. Every day I watched how they grew up and how their mom took care of them.

It wasn’t until I met my husband’s uncle, Rod Prouty, and his wife, Karen that I considered birds as a subject for a painting.

Rod and Karen are wildlife photographers, and their portfolio of wild animals is huge and filled with all unique and sweet moments from the lives of all kinds of creatures.

When Rod offered to let me to use any of his photographs as reference photos for my paintings, I was surprised and thrilled by his generosity .   It took me a couple months until I saw one photo, and I knew immediately, this is the one I want to paint. Then another, one more... and in 5-6 months I already had a full series.  If you ever saw my work side by side with Rod and Karen’s work, you could easily recognize the similarities.  Some of my paintings are direct references to their photos, but some are my impression and collective images from many of their photos. The exhibition of this series is a result of collaboration between three artists, and I appreciate the great part of Rod and Karen.

After all my paintings were framed, I looked at this collection and realized all these birds I painted have a personality.  This is what I wanted to capture, not just pretty feathers and wonderful nature, but the vibrancy of each individual. Rod and Karen’s photos also capture these personalities, which is what inspired me to present my own interpretation through my art.

This exhibition is on display at Queen City Framing and Art Supplies to the end of December 2021
